Landie Bea and Wayne - Update

Good Morning to all -

If there is anyone on this list that doesn't
know, Ladie Bea & Wayne's house has burned. And so sorry for the
delay in passing along info. As luck would have it, Wednesday was
Veteran's day, and the fire marshall and insurance people were all
off work so nothing happened that day. They didn't get to meet with
anyone until Thursday. Very frustrating.

First of all, they both are overwhelmed by the kindness, concern,
love and prayers expressed by all of you in this unbelievable
situation. As much as they would like to see each and everyone of
you, they are still spending much of their day with insurance
people. I'm going to pass along everything I know, if only to
alleviate the burden of them having to repeat the story a hundred times.

As you know, the house burned on Tuesday night. Two different
neighbors had seen the smoke and called 911. We were at dinner and
all headed home around 9:30. They came over the hill to the house to
find 6 fire trucks filling the street in front of their house. First
thought was that there must have been a terrible accident. When they
realized what was happening, they had to get the dogs. The fireman
was not going to let them near the house, and as LB argued with him,
Wayne snuck down the service drive on the side, got a fireman in the
driveway, and took him to the back where the dogs were. The fireman
busted down the door, Wayne called the dogs and, thankfully, they
came to him.

We stood in the street until about midnight, when they then let us go
down and look, and OMG. The main room, kitchen and west side
bedrooms are pretty much destroyed. The curvy hall, their bedroom
and the rooms on the east side of the house were not touched by the
fire but everything, and I mean everything, all the way down to the
washcloths in the cabinets are charred with smoke damage. A
restoration company was there first thing Wednesday morning and
believe that a good bit of stuff in the rooms outside of the fire
damaged areas are savageable.

The fire marshall has determined that the fire was electrical and
that it started on that little side porch behind the guest bedroom on
the southwest corner of the house. All the artwork in the fire
damage areas is destroyed. The insurance people have determined this
as a major structural damage (duh) and now have three different teams
assessing the damage, which will take more time. No one can touch
anything in the house until everything is catalogued and assessed so
there is nothing anyone can do except wait. When the time comes for
help, I can assure you the call will go out and you can jump right in.

If you don't mind, continue to use me as a contact person. Feel free
to call me any time - 830.3756 and i'll tell you anything I know.
Their computers are probably destroyed so they have no access to
email but we're working on getting something set up soon. If you see
that I don't have someone on this list, please forward.

Again, thank you for everything, especially your prayers. I'll
continue to update as I know more.

Animore 2009

The posse showed their support at the first annual Animore charity event for the Alaqua Animal Refuge. The event was held at Bentley's On the Bay.

Wayne gives the guest of honor a pat. This black-mouth cur puppy was just adopted from Alaqua the day before and his proud papa brought him to the party!

Several of the attendees dressed the part, complete in animal prints!

And some just wore their usual party gear. Regardless of the chosen outfit, everyone had a great time and much needed funds were raised to support Alaqua Animal Refuge!

The 30a Posse was joined at Howl @ the Moon by the folks from 30atelevision.com. Apparently the chance of 30 seconds of fame on TV spurred one of the largest groups ever to make their way to Grayton Beach for fun, feasting, festivities, and a fabulous sunset and moonrise!

The 30atelevision.com crew, Paul, Judy, and Julie (from the left) were joined by Jenny and Tim to make sure the recorded the events would pass the rigorous censorship requirements for local programming.

Early birds set the stage for a great Howl.

Karen and PJ brighten up a dull, rainy evening as "Howl @ the Moon" moves inside yet again.

The damp weather hasn't dampened our spirits as we wait for the moon to rise.

Bright lights and even brighter shirts make sure we won't lose Tom!

Now that we're indoors, we can dress up for the "Howl @ the Moon"!

And yes, there was some howling done ... although we're not sure if the moon ever came out!

EASTER 2009 @ SUSAN'S

Easter Sunday 2009 was another beautiful day that the Posse & friends shared together at Susan's house. The weather was awesome, which allowed us to spill out onto the deck & porch, otherwise it would have been elbow to elbow. But it was pretty much that way in the kitchen anyway!! - "...let me get to the fried chicken & where is the ham, etc., etc...." It seems that we gravitate to the kitchen or the bar - why is that??

We stayed late & enjoyed another beautiful Easter together. Sleep came easy for at least one of us. See if you can find that sleepy Posse person.

Queenie Memorial Service

The evening of November 25, 2008 once again found Posse members gathered at Grayton Beach to celebrate. But this time it wasn’t about the sunset or full moon, it was to celebrate the life of our dear departed four legged Jack Russell friend/co-founder of the P.O.E.T.S., Queenie (Poteet). She was the instigator for us gathering for sunsets. The “Queen” insisted that ‘mom & dad’, otherwise know as Peggy & Jim, bring her to the beach every afternoon – didn’t matter about how hot, how cold or if it was pouring rain, she was going to the beach or pace the floor at home, somewhat insistently.

Over the years, our Posse continued to grow – ‘cause we knew Queenie would be bringing Peggy &/or Jim to the beach for sunset and certainly there would be ‘intellectual’ conversation. You know, the likes of Pluto, Socrates and all those dudes. Sure! OK, I think libations had something to do with it!

That evening we gathered to spread her ashes on the beach she loved so much. We gave thanks for all the lives that have gained new meaning, by friendships that have been made and enriched all those countless sunset evenings together, waiting for the day to pass; times sharing our individual journeys with those we have come to love so dearly.

‘The Queen’ has meant more to us than most of us recognize. Our friendships are a tribute to her and times together. R.I.P.

POSSE TAKES ROADTRIP - ATL 3/25-3/27

Somebody had a 'going problem'. So we had to stop.

"Best Butts in Alabama", I've seen better butts than those.

Mauri & Chris' hospitality is superb! We raised 'em up right! There's the proud 'Pops' in the blue shirt (the one with hair), with I'm sure, a contrasting tee shirt, maybe he's even wearing sox. Strange what being in Atlanta will do to you.

Dinner at DOLCE with bowling upstairs, sounds strange. Hey! what can I say? Its Atlanta, where you come to expect strange and know you wont be disappointed.

See that bar behind them? Guess where they are headed!

Of course that's the Artist of the Year & his lovely bride.

They are all so proud of Mikey!!! They'll do anything for a 'show & tell'.

Now this is what I call a 'POSSE'. A real 'love-in'.

Every time you see them, they are holding a vessel with some kind of libation.

OK! Where do we go from here? It has been a long day! Hey you! open your eyes.

POSSE members, Sally & David Smith, Donna Reynolds, Dan Mueller, Sherri & Mike McCarty & Ladie Bea & Wayne Carlisle along with TDC New Product Development Mgr., Vicki Kitahara & friend, David Thomas made a 'mule train' (four wagons) pilgrimage from THE BEACH to Atlanta to participate in a media event for Beaches of South Walton featuring Artist of the Year, Mike McCarty, hosted by the TDC.

That first evening our children, Mauri & Christopher Smith ( Sally & David's son & daughter-in-law, but we claim 'em) hosted a lovely cocktail party at their apartment across the street from our hotel.

After wining & dining, so to speak, with Mauri & Christopher, we walked, in the rain, to DOLCE for dinner. What an interesting concept for a restaurant which features an upscale bowling alley upstairs over the dining room. No that wasn't thunder you heard, it was a strike! We closed down another one and then returned to Twelve, for you guessed it, a nightcap and then it was off to our 'bunk houses'.

The Thursday luncheon, & viewing of many of Mike's paintings, was held at a trendy and fabulous new restaurant, SERPAS. Fifty or so magazine publishers, editors, and writers were assembled to hear the virtues of the Beaches of South Walton and to meet the artist, Mike McCarty, his wife, Sherri and all of their wonderful friends - that would be those of us from So. Walton as well as the McCarty's friends from their years in Atlanta.

After meeting & greeting at SERPAS, the assembled POSSE, which now included Susan Thornton, who had a delayed flight from VPS, rode off to the High Museum of Art, THE HIGH, if you are in the 'in crowd', to get our second dose of culture for the day. I think the Kimosabe is trying to give us new experiences, seeking to broaden our horizons (you know, we come from the Redneck Riveria). The main attraction was the massive display of Chinese Terracotta. No, we are not talking about roof tiles! This exhibit is some of the recently unearthed findings from the two sq. mile tomb area of the First August Emperor of the Qin, King Ying Zheng [ying jung]. This tomb was started in 246 BC and more than 7000 terracotta soldiers, horses, chariots, musicians, artists, animals, etc. have been excavated from some 600 pits. The actual tomb of the king still remains sealed. Over 700,000 convicted criminals helped construct this massive undertaking.

After a couple of hours being 'culturized', we returned to our boutique hotel, Twelve, at Atlantic Station.

Morning came early for some of us, as we prepared for a must see 'point of interest', the Georgia Aquarium. We made our way through the stormy Friday morning rains to the aquarium to be greeted by no less than 10,000 little 'ankle biters', having arrived on countless school buses, dressed in their matching florescent tee shirts, ready for a field trip - away from the drudgery of nursery school, kindergarten, etc. A full 90% of these folks were under eight years of age. OUCH!!! Next time, we'll go at the cocktail hour. Despite the masses of 'them', the whole of the experience was enlightening. The smiley face Beluga whales were my favorite - a close second were the Whale Sharks.

At about noon, four of the weary POSSE, Donna, Dan, Ladie Bea & Wayne, broke & ran, headed for more hospitable climes, Scenic 30-A. Susan followed later in the day on a flight back to VPS, while Sally, David, Sherrie & Mike stayed for more festivities, another cocktail party Friday night and a major wine tasting & art auction on Saturday.

Having successfully traversed the slippery, always under construction, I75/I85 corridor with adverse weather conditions, the first 'stage coach stop' was the Pilot in Newnan, Ga., where cheese crackers & coffee were the best we could do. Then it was back on the trail again, (not so dusty) headed due south. We are headed for the border, that is, the Florida line. But we find a six hour trip a bit much for our tender back-sides (saddle weary), so we must find rest & sustenance in Eufaula, Ala. at the River City Grill. What a delight!!! Good food, service, wine & prices!!

The six o'clock hour found our smiling faces & weary bones back on beautiful rainy Scenic 30-A, glad to be back in our paradise. It doesn't get any better than this!!! We are HOME!!

Really Special Friends - Peggy & Dr. Jim

Whenever Peggy & 'Dr. Jim' are in town, it is cause for celebration. Peggy & Jim have been the 'binder', so to speak, for the group of friends called P.O.E.T.S. Much to our sadness, they sold their lovely home in Grayton Beach and currently are residents of Hunt, Texas, out there on the prairie somewhere. We know they miss all of us so much that they will certainly find themselves a house or maybe a boat back here. Sooner the better as far as we are concerned. So when they were here this spring, Sally & David had the 'obligatory' break bread together event for them at "the new house". Weren't we lucky to be on the short list!!

The Feb. 9th Howl at the Moon gathering was well attended, many new P.O.E.T.S. The comraderie was as good as the food. Friendships get renewed and friendships are made. If you weren't there, hope to see you soon.

NEW YEAR'S ADAM PARTY - 2008

Whoever heard of such, a New Year's Adam Party, sounds like just another excuse for a 'throwdown'. This fun event takes place the night before New Year's Eve, of course, you knew that!!

Dana & Tom have been graciously hosting this fun event and many others for several years now. And as you might have guessed, hats were required. And for those of you not wanting to mess-up your hair, I guess a tiara will do.

And then the next night we have to do this party thing all over again at Hank's.

Somebody needs to get us some rooms reserved at the Betty Ford Clinic, if we keep this pace up.

"What a wonderful day! I just wanted to thank all of you participants in our 4^th Annual Orphan’s Thanksgiving. How happy it makes us to have all of you around us on this holiday. We truly do have lots to be thankful for, especially friends like you. I thank God for you all the time. Thanks for all the just plain fabulous food and all the help ‘getting it together’. Everything was so fine, the weather gave us a huge break and you were all so kind to join us. We thank you and feel truly blessed to have you in our lives. Here’s a toast to 2009 – may it be rewarding to us all. The Name: Georgeen Newell was the first one to define us as a posse. She was explaining to a friend how she had acclimated to this area so well and said she had a posse of friends that brought her into the fold; including her in various functions. She later shared this story with Christopher Renteria, operating partner of Fleming’s Prime Steak House & Wine Bar. Christopher & his wife, Laci & son Max had been included in the 2007 ‘Orphans Thanksgiving’ at Ladie Bea & Wayne’s and had a somewhat similar feeling of inclusion. They too were newcomers to the area. It was Christopher who then started calling this close-knit group of friends the ’30-A Posse’. Debbie Wheeler, writer for the Walton Sun, picked up on the moniker and stated using it in her weekly column. Other restaurateurs, Ollie Petite, Red Bar, Brenda Darr, FIRE, Johnny Earles, formerly Criollas, Harriet Cromlin, Café 30A, and other locals who saw us out and about on a daily basis started using the ‘…Posse’ to reference the group. It has sort of taken on a life of its own.

The Organization: There is none, period, paragraph!! There is no roster, no by-laws, no dress code (well maybe – no socks), no dues, no officers, etc. You get the idea, etc.

The Group:There are some 20+ friends that wine & dine together and celebrate life quite frequently. Sunday brunch @FIRE is a must! The ‘core group’, of which there are about six, have lunch on an almost daily basis (lunch has been known to morph right into sunset). This group is highly likely to reconvene, if they even part, at about 5:00 or whenever sunset happens. They head to Grayton Beach to meet-up with whoever else is out & about. And then we could move right on to The Red Bar, FIRE, Borago, and Café 30A or if we get adventuresome, we’ll go ALL the way to Grand Blvd. & visit with our buddy Christopher at Fleming’s. Some of the friends are in and out of the area for months at a time, but when they return, its back in the saddle again, time to ride - head ‘em up & move ‘em out.

The Functions: Holidays and full moons are times of our largest gatherings. The word goes out and the masses gather. The greater group will include 50-70 who will bring what they like to eat & drink and spread it out for all those gathered. Full Moon gatherings have been a standard for many years. Every month, on the event of the full moon (there are sometimes two full moons in a month, the second one is the ‘Blue Moon’, and that means you have to do it again), the group meets at Grayton Beach directly behind the Red Bar. This is where the spread of food & adult beverages happens, while waiting for the sun to set & the moon to rise. These events demand a toast & a howl, respectively.

The initial holiday gathering was for what we call ‘Orphans Thanksgiving’ at Ladie Bea & Wayne’s. Orphans being defined as not having a family group to gather with or having family you don’t want to be with. That year, 2005, there were about 35-40 that gathered.Other holiday group feastings are: Christmas Day @ ‘Tall’ Tom Hopkins’, New Year’s Adam Party, (the night before New Year’s Eve) @ Dana & Tom Saffel’s, New Year’s Eve @ Hank White’s, Easter Sunday @ Susan Thornton’s and 4th of July @ Grayton Beach.

The Rest:The Posse, generally speaking, makes every effort to support our community art events, Cultural Arts shows, Seaside Rep Theater, Seaside First Friday Art Walkabout, musical presentations at WaterColor, Rosemary Beach, Alys Beach. We also support fund raising events for the Children’s Vol. Health Network, Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital, & Children In Crisis, etc.
